10 great reasons to choose Lockwood

View the Top 10 things kiwis look for when they build

01 Great Range

Lockwood has a huge range of homes to choose from. Choose Classic for the timeless Lockwood look and warmth of natural timber. Contempo offers the opportunity to combine Lockwood timber with conventional walls and ceilings. Our Initial range is perfect for urban living and affordability, and EcoSmart breaks new ground in having minimal impact on the environment, from the build right through to everyday use.

02 The Lockwood building system

Lockwood walls are locked together, not nailed together. Lockwood’s intricately engineered aluminium profile design slots into the machined corners of solid laminated pine, locking the wood into position. This patented system, combined with the use of vertical tie rods in the walls, has proven resistant to earthquakes and cyclones all over the world. The insulation properties of the solid wall construction have the flexibility to provide comfort in the extreme temperatures experienced in locations from Alaska to the Middle East.

03 Design & Build freedom

Lockwood wants you to live in nothing less than your dream home. Whether it’s a matter of adapting one of our existing plans or coming up with something completely fresh, our experienced franchise teams will be there to help you through every step of designing and building your new home.

04 Environmentally friendly

Lockwood takes environmental responsibility seriously. And the fact is, all our homes are environmentally friendly, and have been since the beginning - it’s just that some, like our EcoSmart range, are even more so. Timber is the perfect building material. During the growing process, trees literally eat carbon. A harvested tree is over 50 percent carbon by weight. By sourcing our pine timber from plantation forests, we ensure that your Lockwood home helps the planet right from the start.

05 Quality Assurance

By taking the time to kiln-dry our timber, we reduce the tendency for twisting, warping and shrinkage so common with young wood and air-dried timber. All structural components are machined to precise specifications, inspected, numbered and treated to meet New Zealand building standards. Our strict quality control procedures ensure that nothing but the best timber and components are used - your home is constructed more accurately, more quickly and more effectively than by conventional building methods.

06 Earthquake and cyclone resistance

The Lockwood Building System has been tested by independent engineers and proven to be earthquake and cyclone resistant. Twenty-two tests conducted by Wakefield Laboratories at 7.5 on the Richter scale left the Lockwood home unscathed, and wind tests of up to 50m/sec (115mph) also proved successful. Lockwood homes withstand earthquakes and cyclones all over the world, including New Zealand, Japan, Australia, the Pacific Islands and the Middle East.

07 Portability

Lockwood homes can be relocated more easily than conventional homes as they are structurally flexible, with no wall-linings or rigid fixings to break, or plaster, or paint or paper to tear or damage. In a disaster-relief situation, Lockwood has provided homeless families with transportable housing - useful for commercial buildings and for those requiring accommodation whilst awaiting completion of their new Lockwood home!

08 Fire Resistance

Metal support beams are quickly weakened by extreme heat generated by fire, while our thick, laminated beams continue to support a burning building for a far greater period. The fire-resistant properties of these dense timber structures make Lockwood a preferred choice for residential and commercial buildings alike.

09 A Kiwi original

our storyIn 1951 Jo La Grouw Senior pioneered a unique engineering innovation that revolutionised the New Zealand building industry. He created the Lockwood Building System - giving rise to a national passion for natural timber lifestyle homes. Since then, Lockwood has worked closely with homeowners to evolve our designs to anticipate their needs - continually refining and improving our ability to deliver their dreams. The result? Custom timber homes that stand the test of time.

We arrived in Aitutaki two days after cyclone Pat had devastated the island, removing 70% of the roofs & demolishing many homes completely. It was with great relief to arrive on our land to find our Lockwood home standing tall.
- The Tossells, Aitutaki
"When I realised we were having a severe earthquake, my first thoughts were "I'll be safe in my Lockwood house.
- Carol Marsh, Darfield
Because of all the aftershocks after the first quake, my husband (a licensed builder) went next door to see if our neighbour Carol was all right. He then decided it would be safer if ourselves and several other neighbours stayed in her Lockwood home until the shocks subsided
- Christine Robertson, neighbour of Carol Marsh
We live in a Lockwood home very near the fault line that ruptured. Houses around us suffered terrible structural damage. Ours just creaked and groaned its way through. Only got two broken pot plants.
- Brian Pearson
The design of the home exceeded our expectations. It looks good, is easy to maintain and has a great relaxed feel about the whole place.
- The Coles, Waikato
We wanted a home which capitalised on and maximises the potential of the section and its magnificent location and view, and you have built it for us - a lovely blonded Lockwood residence.
- Adrian and Danielle, Taupo
I work in the project engineering game and it is unusual to strike an integrated team that meets and exceeds expectations in terms of client relationship, quality and performance. We enjoyed the experience and, of course, the final product.
- Jon, Coromandel
The entire project from inception to completion was undertaken with full understanding and empathy for our requirements, a high degree of workmanship from all trades and a high degree of professionalism throughout the construction period.
- Roy and Marian, Hahei
We were looking for a hassle-free building experience - which is exactly what we got. From the initial meetings and amendment of plans to suit us, to the sorting of any issues that arose, to the hand-over, and especially for the trouble-free follow-up with any queries.
- Christine and John, Hokitika
