This Church was designed and built for the LDS church in Kiribati, a small island nation near the equator in the central Pacific Ocean. A build site was chosen in Betio, the largest township of Kiribati's capital city, South Tarawa.
The brief was to provide a high-quality church meeting house in this remote and exposed location in the Pacific. The build quality had to comply with the Pacific Island’s building standards including higher levels of timber treatment due to the area being termite-prone. This site is very near the sea and is subject to salt spray, very high temperatures and humidity. Due to the remote location, all building material had to be imported to the site. Local labour was utilised with additional technical support from Lockwood.
There are always challenges to building in such a remote location but the Church was completed to specification and within the time frame specified and now provides a strong and safe meeting house for the LDS Church and the community.
